Continental's innovative off-road tyre adapts to operational conditionsHanover, 1st April 2007. German tyre manufacturer Continental has a new addition to its range that adapts to operational conditions - depending on whether it is used on or off the road or in mixed applications, the new ContiACDContact 4x4 tyre quickly changes its tread pattern. This means it is no longer necessary to fit application-related tyres on 4x4 SUVs: "A revolution in the tyre world" is how insiders describe it. What makes this development possible is the innovative smart rubber used in the tyre, which reacts to heat build-up in different driving situations. The abbreviation ACD appropriately stands for 'All Terrain Convertible Durable Tyre'.
Deliveries of this new universal tyre for 4x4s are beginning today. However, in the run-up to this, Hanover-based Continental had already contacted several tyre dealers and vehicle manufacturers on the quiet and filled their order books. "The first ContiACDContact are already in use today" said a delighted Eric Softlug, the developer of these tyres. "Our customers are of course very pleased. The narrower production scope means that the tyres cost considerably less to buy and there is no need for tyre retailers or off-road enthusiasts to keep expensive stocks of replacement tyres in a range of models."

Yet essentially what the tyre developers did was simple: "The smart rubber in the tread pattern reacts to different frictional conditions" explained Eric Softlug. "The road tread pattern, which is optimised for lateral guidance and short braking distances, is created by the frictional energy generated on the tyre sidewalls during cornering. The heat build-up releases specific tread elements that form a typical tread pattern." On traction tyres, the heat tends to build up more in the tread centre - and it is here that the typical coarse off-road tread pattern soon becomes visible. On tyres for mixed applications, too, the appropriate heat also builds up to create the typical tread pattern in the 'smart' rubber, according to the expert.
"The smart rubber is clever enough to identify the correct traction mechanisms for the respective application" commented Softlug. "The smart rubber is also able to communicate with conventional, less talented tyres - the clever rubber is able to coach them." This means that combining the new tyres with other conventional tyre models or products made by different manufacturers is not a problem - because 'coaching' works well. The only pre-condition is that before setting off, the tyre has to be run in over a distance of around 500 metres in the respective application. Remoulding these tyres is also straightforward, because once again the rubber learns to adapt and almost silently forms the smooth surface required for remoulding.
